'Compassion Capital ' Funding Extends Faith-Based Initiative

The House recently passed HR1, the economic stimulus/recovery bill. Unfortunately, the bill provides $100 million of public taxpayer money for faith-based programs. Although there are programs which work well and abide by non-discrimination hiring regulations, some faith-based organizations are free to hire or fire based on religion or personal lifestyle. Personal discrimination with public money. Americans United is opposed to this funding based in no small part on the history of the department:
- poor oversight and inadequate civil rights & civil liberties safeguards
- funds sometimes were directed to organizations run by political allies of the Religious Right

House Bill HR1 does, however, forbid public money from being spent on religious schools or houses of worship, an important step forward in ensuring that no public funds further discrimination.
